Soldier from Northern California killed in Afghanistan

ChaseAn Army soldier from Northern California has been killed in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Wednesday.

Spc. Chase Marta, 24, of Chico, was killed in Ghazni province when his vehicle struck an improvised explosive device. Marta, a paratrooper, was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, from Fort Bragg, N.C.

Also killed in the attack that took Marta's life were Sgt. Jacob Schwallie, 22, of Clarksville, Tenn., and Pfc. Dustin Gross, 19, of Jeffersonville, Ky.
