Soldier from central California killed in Afghanistan

A U.S. Army soldier has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense announced Monday.

Spc. Vilmar Galarza Hernandez, 21, of Salinas was killed Saturday in Kandahar province when his unit was attacked by an improvised explosive device. Hernandez was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, from Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.
