Once it was one of the premiere playgrounds of California for fishing, camping and boating, but the Salton Sea State Recreation Area is now facing closure due to the state's financial distress.

A fundraising effort is underway to keep the recreation area open, and there is talk of the state government cutting a deal with the federal government. But the chances look bleak.

"At this point, we're behind the eight ball," said Bill Meister, president of the Sea and Desert Interpretive Assn.
