San Bernardino police looking into body found under woodpile

May 23, 2012 |  1:39 pm

San Bernardino police on Wednesday were continuing to investigate the death of a man found underneath a backyard woodpile.

Officers were called to a rental property in the 200 block of East 11th Street about 9 a.m. on Tuesday after the property owner noticed a "strong foul odor" coming from the woodpile, said Lt. Paul Williams of the San Bernardino Police Department.

Police saw what appeared to be a body in a large hole dug underneath the pile, Williams said.

The man was later identified as 21-year-old Angel Cortez. Williams declined to say how Cortez was connected to the property, citing the ongoing investigation.

For now, the case is being treated as a death investigation, not a homicide, Williams said. That could change, he said, pending additional information from the coroner's office regarding the decomposition of the body and cause of death.
