A Palmdale mother has been charged with attempted murder after authorities alleged she tried to drown her 8-year-old son in their apartment complex pool.

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies said they responded to the Monte Vista Apartments in the 2500 block of Olive Drive at 7:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving a call that a woman was attempting to hold her son's head underwater in the community pool.

Bystanders jumped in to rescue the boy, said Deputy Guillermina Saldaña. They told TV reporters they heard the woman yelling at her son, "You have to go. This is the end of the world."

Allair McDougall, 33, was removed from the apartment complex kicking and screaming, and was arrested, police said. Her son was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was listed in stable condition.

McDougall remained in custody Friday morning on $1-million bail.
