6-year-old drowned accidentally at Memorial Day party, police say

A 6-year-old La Cañada Flintridge girl who drowned in her family's swimming pool during a Memorial Day block party died accidentally, investigators said.

Deputies were called to a house in the 4900 block of Indianola Way about 9 p.m. Monday after the girl's family reportedly found her in the backyard pool.

KTLA-TV said the unidentified victim and a 5-year-old friend left the block party—which was in front of the house—to go inside and get cake. Some time later, the 5-year-old came back, sopping wet, which prompted the victim's family to look for the 6-year-old.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Sheriff's officials said Tuesday that homicide detectives determined the drowning was accidental.

KTLA-TV reported there was a fence around the pool, but it had been damaged.
