O.C. man charged with slitting dog's throat gets 5 years

Jaime Arturo Garcia was sentenced for slitting his dog's throatA Stanton man was sentenced Tuesday to five years in state prison for killing his dog by slitting its throat and for setting fires inside his home.

Jaime Arturo Garcia, 31, was charged with giving his 7-year-old dog Dexter, a dachsund mix, various pills before cutting him with a large kitchen knife on July 24, 2011.

The bleeding dog ran around the home and into the bedroom, where it died on Garcia's bed, according to the Orange County district attorney's office.

Garcia was also charged with setting fires in his home by lighting piles of clothing. 

One of Garcia's sisters arrived at the home and called 911 after smelling smoke. Authorities found Dexter in the bedroom, prosecutors said.
