Mystery shrouds South L.A. house's decomposed bodies

Along West 81st Street in South L.A., no one Tuesday seemed to know much about the woman whose corpse was found decomposing in her apartment with another body, perhaps that of a man.

“She was a real nice lady,” said Terry Williams, a neighbor. “She was quiet and discreet about what she was going through in life.”

Williams said she thought the woman lived with her young son in the back downstairs apartment of a two-story complex in the 900 block of W. 81st Street. But no one on the working-class street Tuesday knew her name.

The bodies were discovered Monday afternoon in the apartment after police were called about a strong odor coming from a rear apartment.

Williams said a friend who lives in the woman’s apartment complex told him the smell was unbearable late in the afternoon.

“He said it was like someone died. We didn’t believe him,” she said.

A neighbor had called police, saying she had not seen the lady for several days and was worried. Officers entered the apartment with their noses covered by their shirts, he said.

Police have no made no arrests in the case and have not publicly identified the corpses they found.
