Marine, just back from Afghanistan, dies in fall at Grand Canyon

A Marine from Camp Pendleton, just back from a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan, fell to his death at the South Rim of the Grand Canyon on Tuesday.

Pfc. Russ Klingsick, 20, was returning to his home in Derby, Kan., when he and a buddy stopped for some sightseeing at the Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona.

Klingsick fell 30 feet to a ledge and then, groggy from the fall, attempted to stand up, falling another 600 feet to his death, according to the Associated Press.

Klingsick was with the 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, just returning to Camp Pendleton from Helmand province.
