Man killed by San Diego deputy was from Los Angeles County

The man fatally shot Sunday by a San Diego County sheriff's deputy has been identified as 22-year-old Elwood Edwards of Los Angeles County.

Edwards had thrown rocks through the window of an AM/PM market and the windshield of a car, according to the Oceanside Police Department, and had also hit a customer at the market with a 32-ounce glass bottle.

Oceanside police and sheriff's deputies, responding to an emergency call, found Edwards half a mile from the market. He was acting in an "irrational manner" and lunged at officers with a stick, Oceanside police said.

Sheriff's Deputy Mike Astorga, a five-year veteran, fired a single shot, police said. Edwards was declared dead at the scene.
