Car plunges into Malibu canyon; driver is killed

Car careers off Malibu road; driver killed

One person died Thursday morning after a vehicle drove off a Malibu road and plunged into a canyon.

The single-vehicle crash occurred about 9:50 a.m. on Malibu Canyon Road just north of Malibu Crest Drive, said Officer Christian Cracraft of California Highway Patrol.

No information was available about the driver, who was thrown from the vehicle. Cracraft said no one else was in the vehicle at the time.

Malibu Canyon Road was closed between Piuma Road and Civic Center Way and would likely remain so until 4 p.m., Cracraft said. Coroner's officials were heading to the scene Thursday afternoon to assist with the ongoing investigation.
