Lawndale man dies in house fire (updated)

A Lawndale man died in a fire at his home early Saturday morning, authorities said.

The victim, who has not been identified, was believed to be in his 80s, according to the Los Angeles County coroner’s office.

When county firefighters were called to the scene in the 15200 block of Freeman Avenue at 2:05 a.m. Saturday, they found smoke billowing from the house and put the fire out in a matter of minutes.

A man and two women who attempted to rescue the man who died were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, authorities said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

[Updated, 11 a.m.: Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department investigators  say they found no signs of foul play but are still trying to determine the cause of the fire. The three people transported to a local hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation, are   relatives of the victim, 83, and lived at the house.]
