L.A. mom defends her breastfeeding Time cover photo
Jamie Grumet, the woman in the controversial Time magazine cover on breastfeeding, is a Los Angeles mother and she's speaking out.
The magazine image shows Grumet's 3-year-old son, Aram, standing on a chair so he can better suckle at his standing mother's breast, with both mother and child looking intently into the camera.
Grumet, 26, said she was trying to make a point with the cover shot.
"The statement that I wanted to make was this is a normal option for your child and it should not be stigmatized," she told ABC News. "I'm never saying this is for everybody, but it should be something that's accepted."
In the Time article, she said she's been confronted by strangers who see her son nursing and threaten "to call social services on me or that it's child molestation."
The cover has generated much debate both about breastfeeding and about the decision to put the photo on the cover of the magazine.
Grumet told Access Hollywood she expected some criticism: "We knew what we were getting into and [that] there would be a lot of backlash," she said.
She was aware of some of the concerns that the cover is too provocative but said the photo makes a point. "I really didn't want to disappoint anyone with it."
