L.A. Now Live: Chat about mayor's proposed parking ticket hikes

May 8, 2012 |  6:00 am

Join Times City Hall reporter David Zahniser and City Editor Shelby Grad for a discussion about Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's proposal to increase parking fines.

The chat is scheduled for Tuesday at 9 a.m. PDT. Zahniser will be answering questions live, or they can be submitted using the comment button above.

Zahniser reports that the mayor is pursuing another big boost in parking ticket fines, leaving some of them 70% to 90% more expensive than the year he was elected — and several times the region's inflation rate.

The penalty for parking in a street-sweeping zone would reach $78, more than in any neighboring city and, in certain cases, nearly twice the amount charged elsewhere in Los Angeles County, according to the mayor's proposed budget.

Villaraigosa's office says a proposed $10 increase to an array of parking fines would make a small but important dent in the city's $238-million deficit.
