Westminster car crash leaves one dead and two critically injured [Updated]

At least one person was killed and two others were critically injured Thursday afternoon when two cars collided in Westminster, authorities said.

The fatal crash occurred about 5 p.m. near the intersection of Hoover Street and Hazard Avenue, according to Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.

Firefighters had to extricate victims from one of the vehicles.

Stone said one person was declared dead at the scene. Two others were taken to trauma centers in Santa Ana and Irvine. He did not know the ages or genders of the victims.

The Westminster Police Department is investigating the crash.

[Update, 8:12 p.m., April 5, 2012: Westminster Police Sgt. Cameron Knauerhaze said Thursday evening that an adult female passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene. The two people injured are adult males.

Knauerhaze said one vehicle was heading north on Hoover Street, the other was heading south. Police have closed the street in both directions between Hazard and Bolsa avenues to investigate the crash.]
