L.A. community groups rally to support Trayvon Martin
Community members and celebrities gathered at a Jefferson Park church Thursday to rally against racial profiling and to support slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin.
The rally, held at West Angeles Church of God in Christ, was attended by family members of 17-year-old Trayvon, who was shot and killed by neighborhood watch commander George Zimmerman in February while walking home form a convenience store.
"I believe in God," Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, said at the rally, according to KTLA-TV. "I believe that justice will be served."
The Rev. Jesse Jackson and comedian Paul Rodriguez also attended.
"What kind of nation are we living in if we can put a black man in the White House but we can't walk a black teenager through gated community in Sanford, Florida?" Jackson asked.
Zimmerman, who has said he killed Trayvon in self-defense, was not arrested after being questioned by police the night of the shooting. He was arrested weeks later and charged with second-degree murder after a special prosecutor was assigned to the case.
Zimmerman was released from jail on bond early Monday. He has entered a not guilty plea.
It was reported that Zimmerman collected about $204,000 in donations through his website but did not discluse the contributions during his bond hearing last week. A judge ruled Friday that he could keep the money for the time being.
