Video shows Big Blue Bus fight that left rider battling for life

April 25, 2012 |  4:04 pm

A bus rider is fighting for his life in a hospital with serious head injuries after he was slugged by a fellow passenger on a Santa Monica Big Blue Bus, an attack that was captured on the vehicle's security video.

Los Angeles police detectives hope the video of the April 5 attack on Luis Contreras in West L.A. about 7:05 p.m. will yield the name of the man whose face is clearly captured on video as punches are thrown. The video shows Contreras falling  to the floor near the bus doors while his attacker jumps over his body and leaves.

“This fight literally started over one individual stepping on the foot of the other. Words were exchanged and punches were thrown,” said West Bureau Homicide Det. Luis Carranza, who is assigned to the case.

Carranza said several passengers on the bus witnessed the incident. So far the wtnesses have been unable to identify the individual involved in the fight.

“We need someone to watch the video and look at the photographs,” Carranza explained. “Anyone with information can contact us. We just want to know why this unfortunate incident occurred. We want to speak with him to get his side of the story.”

The bus was traveling in the area of Westwood Boulevard and Rochester Avenue in West Los Angeles when the fight erupted.

Anyone with information on this crime is urged to call LAPD West Bureau Homicide Detectives, Detectives Armando Acero or Luis Carranza at (213) 382-9470. Anonymous tips can be called into (877) 527-3247
