Stolen safe may have held $10 million in jewelry, other items

Los Angeles Police Department detectives are searching for whoever broke into a Hancock Park home and stole a safe that reportedly held as much as $10 million in valuables.

Authorities released sketches and photos of the valuable items believed to in the safe on the department's website. The items included diamond rings, bracelets, a necklace, gold watches and cash, police officials said.

The burglary occurred about 8:20 p.m. March 16 in the 200 block of South Highland Avenue, Los Angeles police said in a statement. Officers went to the home when the security alarm was triggered by the burglars.

LAPD detectives determined that the suspects had jumped over a security gate, used an unknown object to smash the side glass door and entered the home. Inside, the burglars found the victim's safe in a walk-in closet and used the rug outside the bedroom to move the safe down the stairs and out the front door.

Investigators, however, have expressed some reservations about the value of the items because the owner has been unable to provide documentation, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the case but not authorized to speak publicly.
