Shoplifting suspect in custody after shooting at LAPD officers

A shoplifting suspect fleeing police Thursday evening fired several shots at officers in southeast Los Angeles, authorities said.

No Los Angeles Police Department officers were hurt in the shooting, which was reported about 6:25 p.m. in the 10200 block of Avalon Boulevard, said department spokeswoman Karen Rayner.

According to Rayner, officers responding to a shoplifting call encountered a suspect who ran from the location. During the brief foot chase, the suspect turned toward the officers and fired several shots in their direction, Rayner said.

The officers did not return fire.

The suspect, who was not immediately identified, was arrested. A gun has not yet been recovered.
