Wilmington police chase ends in crash; suspect's state is serious

April 5, 2012 | 10:38 pm

A motorist who allegedly tried to evade police in Wilmington was in serious condition Thursday night after crashing into a tree, according to a Los Angeles Police Department spokeswoman.

About 7:30 p.m., police officers saw someone driving erratically and attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled and crashed into a tree at the corner of Anaheim Street and Figueroa Place, said LAPD Officer Karen Rayner.

The chase lasted no more than a few seconds, Rayner said.

Firefighters had to extricate the person from the mangled car. The driver was taken to a hospital. The driver is listed in serious condition, Rayner said.

No other details were immediately available.
