Marine from Camp Pendleton killed in Afghanistan

A Marine from Camp Pendleton has been killed in combat in Afghanistan, the Departent of Defense announced Monday.

Staff Sgt. Joseph Fankhauser, 30, of McAllen,  Texas, was killed Sunday in Helmand province. He  was assigned to the 7th Engineer Support Battalion,  1st Marine Logistics Group, 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, at Camp Pendleton.

Fankhauser was on his second deployment to Afghanistan. He also made three deployments to Iraq.

His medals from previous deployments include a Combat Action Ribbon and Purple Heart.
