Marine charged with murder in bludgeon slaying of roommate

April 13, 2012 |  7:43 pm

A Marine has been charged with premeditated murder, which can carry the death penalty, for the bludgeon slaying of his roommate at Camp Pendleton, the Marine Corps announced.

Lance Cpl. Darren Evans, 19, is charged in the Nov. 6 death of Lance Cpl. Mario Arias Jr., 19, of Canoga Park. Both were assigned to a helicopter squadron and shared a room in a barracks on base.

Evans beat Arias to death with a crowbar in a drunken rage, prosecutors said at a preliminary hearing at Camp Pendleton called an Article 32. After the hearing, a general acting as the convening authority in the case ruled that Evans should face the maximum charge at court martial.
