Earthquake: 3.1 quake strikes near Indio

A shallow magnitude 3.1 earthquake was reported Thursday morning nine miles from Indio, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 4:46 a.m. PDT at a depth of 2.5 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was nine miles from Coachella, 14 miles from La Quinta, 24 miles from Twentynine Palms and 92 miles from San Diego.

In the past 10 days, there have been two earthquakes magnitude 3.0 and greater centered nearby.
