Armed men rob Sears store in Montebello mall

Masked gunmen staged a brazen robbery of a Sears store in Montebello shortly before closing time Monday night.

No one was hurt in the robbery at the store at in the 1400 block of North Montebello Boulevard  in the Montebello Town Square Shopping Center, said Police Lt. Michael Bergman.

Bergman said 911 operators started getting calls about 8:50 p.m. from Sears customers saying that two men were in the process of robbing the department store.

"They stormed into the location armed with handguns," Bergman said.

Both were wearing ski masks and bandannas to cover their faces. They ran to an area near the front of the store and demanded cash.

They made off with $16,000, Bergman said. No shots were fired.

"They were in and out pretty fast," he said. "They have to be when they’re that brazen, because people are going to start using their cellphones," Bergman said.

The robbers ran out the store and up an embankment, where they got into a vehicle that witnesses described as a black SUV or truck, and sped off south on Montebello Boulevard.

Anyone with information about the crime is asking to call Montebello police detectives at (323) 887-1262.
