Man accused of trying to kill San Bernardino County deputy

A Wonder Valley man was in custody Tuesday on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer after he allegedly attacked a sheriff's deputy who had been called to a home where firefighters were trying to extinguish an illegal fire.

Robert Robertson, 46, was booked Monday after he allegedly tried to grab control of the deputy's baton during an incident in the 6700 block of Sandpit Ranch Road, said officials with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies went to the home about 10:30 a.m. Monday after the San Bernardino County Fire Department reported that a resident conducting an illegal burn refused to put it out and was threatening fire personnel with garden tools.

Robertson allegedly attacked the deputy, and the two began to fight over the baton. As the deputy and Robertson fought on the ground, firefighters tried to distract the suspect, sheriff's officials said in a statement.

Firefighters were able to distract Robertson long enough for the deputy to push him aside. Then the deputy used his stun gun on the man, but it was ineffective. The deputy was finally able to subdue Robertson and place him in handcuffs in the back of his patrol car.

Robertson was booked into the West Valley Detention Center, where he was being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

The unidentified deputy was taken to High Desert Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and released Monday evening, officials said.
