Baby whale, possibly sick, drifts near San Diego County coast

March 6, 2012 |  9:50 am

A baby whale, possibly injured or sick, was spotted Monday night in the surf in several spots along the northern San Diego County coast.

The animal was spotted in Del Mar, Torrey Pines and La Jolla, lifeguards said.

It's unclear whether the whale is sick or otherwise in distress. It was last seen around 6 p.m. Monday, going out to sea, possibly to continue its migration.

More than 20,000 gray whales pass along the Southern California coast every winter, beginning their annual journey south from Arctic waters to the shallow lagoons and bays of Baja California to give birth. They return again in the spring.
