Atascadero state mental hospital on lockdown for more than a week

March 27, 2012 |  3:04 pm

Atascadero State Hospital

Atascadero State Hospital has been on lockdown for more than a week, an official said Tuesday.

The hospital was locked down the evening of March 20 after incidents “that involved both patients and employees,” said spokesman Craig Dacus. He declined to elaborate about the incidents.

The hospital houses more than 1,000 men who suffer from mental disabilities or who pose threats to themselves or others. Most have been ordered held for treatment by state courts or corrections officials.

During a lockdown, patients are kept in their units and visitors are not allowed. The lockdown was briefly lifted the following morning but was soon reinstated “as a precautionary measure,” he said.
