Sex offender charged with rape, murder at O.C. motel

March 21, 2012 |  2:55 pm

A registered sex offender was charged Wednesday with the rape and murder of a 29-year-old woman in a Stanton motel room.

Charles Patrick Drew, 62, is accused of raping and sodomizing the unidentified woman, who died during the sexual assault.

Described by Orange County prosecutors as a transient, Drew has two prior convictions for rape and assault with a deadly weapon. He faces a minimum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The brutality of the case also makes him eligible for the death penalty, prosecutors said.

According to the Orange County district attorney's office, Drew was sharing a room at a Motel 6 in Stanton with the woman over the weekend when he sexually assaulted her, killing her during the commission of rape, sodomy and oral copulation.

Prosecutors said he attempted to clean the crime scene and asked someone to call 911 on Monday because the woman was unresponsive.

Drew is being held without bail.
