Santa Ana couple arrested on suspicion of sexual assault of girl

A man and woman have been arrested in Santa Ana in a sexual assault case involving a 9-year-old girl who lives with them, police said Wednesday.

Nazario Enrique Cruz-Sanchez, 40, of Santa Ana, was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault while his partner, Estela Garcia, 28, of Santa Ana, was arrested on suspicion of encouraging and participating in the acts, police said.

Authorities say Garcia is related to the victim.

Police began the investigation March 16 after receiving a call from the principal of the girl's school. Authorities said the girl told a friend she was being sexually assaulted by a family member, and the friend told school staff.

The Orange County district attorney's office has filed a total of six counts against Cruz-Sanchez and Garcia.
