Man injured, dog dies in 35-foot fall in Corona del Mar

Newport Beach firefighters rescue a man who fell 35 feetA man was injured and his golden retriever died Friday morning after they fell about 35 feet at a Corona del Mar beach.

Newport Beach firefighters responded at 6:50 a.m. to a report that a man and his dog had slipped off the rocks at Pirate's Cove, falling to the beach below.

Rescuers approached the beach in a Harbor Patrol boat. The man was transported by an Orange County Sheriff's Department boat to a Newport Beach medic van at the Harbor Department and taken in serious condition to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana.

The dog was found dead upon the rescuers' arrival.
