Laguna Beach man who molested a boy in mall bathroom is sentenced

A Laguna Beach man who pleaded guilty last year to molesting a 5-year-old boy in a public bathroom was sentenced Thursday to six years in prison, prosecutors said.

Nicholas James Needham, 28, was not in court for the sentencing because he is currently serving a nine-year sentence in federal prison for child pornography.

Prosecutors said Needham, a registered sex offender, fondled a boy in the bathroom of an Orange shopping mall in June 2010. The boy’s mother was waiting for him outside.

When police later searched Needham’s home they found thousands of images and three videos of child pornography. The pornography case was turned over to federal prosecutors because Needham would face a longer sentence in federal court than state court, prosecutors said.

The six-year sentence handed down Thursday in Orange County Superior Court will be served concurrently with Needham's federal sentence.
