Skier missing after avalanche near Lake Tahoe

A search was underway Thursday in mountains near Lake Tahoe for a skier injured during an avalanche, according to news reports.

At 3 p.m., a team of rescuers and skiers began searching for the unidentified man, who was injured and trapped after an avalanche earlier in the afternoon in Alpine Meadows, a Tahoe City ski resort, the Sacramento Bee reported, citing a Placer County Sheriff's Office news release.

The skier was stuck in rugged terrain that rescuers say is difficult to reach.

The incident was reported to authorities by another skier in a group that was with the victim. That skier was able to escape the area and reach the sheriff's office.
