A 100-foot tree fell on a house in Calaveras County, killing an 8-year-old girl.

The tree fell Sunday morning on a house on Moran Road, near the town of Arnold. The girl was identified by authorities as Hailey Verzani.

Deputies were called about 6:30 a.m. Sunday to rescue the girl, who was trapped in the home.

After securing the tree from causing more damage, deputies found the girl in her room, pinned between her bed and the tree. Officers declared her dead at the scene and are ruling it an accident.

The girl’s mother, Lindsey Jacoby, and the mother’s boyfriend were in the home when the tree fell and made it out without serious injury.

Hailey was in the third grade at Hazel Fischer Elementary School in White Pines.
