Iraq war veteran kills himself, 11-year-old sister; mom missing

Police in Gilroy are searching for the missing mother of a 27-year-old veteran who shot and killed his 11-year-old sister before killing himself.

Evidence found by police at the family’s apartment suggests that Martha Gutierrez, 52, may be critically injured or dead, Sgt. Chad Gallacinao said in a news release.

Police found the bodies of Abel Gutierrez and his sister inside the Gilroy apartment late Wednesday and have been searching for his mother since.

Police had responded previously to calls at the home and were told by family members that Gutierrez suffered from post traumatic stress disorder. Police officials were working with Gutierrez and his family to coordinate veterans' services for him, Gallacinao said in the release.

The Gilroy Dispatch identified Gutierrez as an Iraq war veteran.
