Fourth suspect arrested in San Diego scheme to rob drunk males

March 3, 2012 |  8:53 am

San Diego police have arrested a fourth suspect in an unusual robbery scheme in which the victims were young men who were drunk after a night of partying in the city's Gaslamp Quarter nightclub zone.

From August to December, several victims reported that they had been approached by men identifying themselves as plainclothes police officers on a late-night "sobriety check" detail. The victims, in various stages of deep intoxication, apparently did not ask to see badges.

The victims would then be put in the back of the ersatz officers' cars and driven around San Diego before being robbed of wallets, cellphones and ATM cards. Eight victims have been identified and investigators believe there are more victims of the "Sobriety Check Kidnap Series."

The fourth, and police believe the final, suspect Christian Fanua was arrested Friday. Fanua, 27, is being held in county jail on $500,000 bail and set to be arraigned next week on charges of kidnapping with intent to commit robbery.
