Foul odor prompts evacuation of Rancho Mirage orthopedic clinic

A foul odor at an orthopedic clinic near the Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage forced the temporary evacuation of 130 patients and staff members Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The unusual smell was on the third floor of the Desert Orthopedic Center on the 39000 block of Bob Hope Drive, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the clinic just after 9 a.m., evacuating 80 employees and 50 patients. Hazardous materials crews and the gas company both responded. No gas leaks were found, and the source of the odor has not been determined.

The building was reopened at 11:30 a.m.
