Deputy wounded, rape suspect killed in parking lot shootout

San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies were trying to track down a suspect in a rape and robbery Thursday when they found themselves in a shootout with the suspect, a spokeswoman for the department said.

One deputy was shot in the leg and the suspect was killed shortly after 10 a.m. in the parking lot of a Stater Bros. grocery store at Highland and Del Rosa avenues in San Bernardino.

Deputies from Highland and Yucaipa tracked the suspect in the March 22 incident to the shopping center. When they arrived, the suspect noticed the deputies and ran. He then turned around and fired multiple shots at deputies, said spokeswoman Jodi Miller.

A woman who was with the suspect has been detained, Miller said. Their names were not immediately available.

The injured deputy was released from the hospital and is recovering at home with his family, Miller said.
