Beyonce, the tiny puppy, a true 'survivor'

March 28, 2012 |  3:09 pm

BeyonceThe caretaker of a tiny puppy who fits inside a coffee cup says she is one of the smallest dogs ever born full-term and called her a survivor.

Beyonce, a dachshund mix, was born March 8 in San Bernardino County, according to Beth Decaprio, executive director of the Grace Foundation of Northern California.

Beyonce's mother was picked up by animal control and was set to be euthanized before being rescued by the foundation in El Dorado Hills near Sacramento, according to the foundation.

Beyonce, the last of five puppies to be born, weighed 1 ounce at birth and fit in a tablespoon. She didn't start breathing until she had been given chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. Because Beyonce was too young to nurse, her caretakers bottle-fed her.

Now the size of an iPhone, Beyonce is much stronger and fights with her four siblings to nurse, Decaprio said.

"She's a tough little one," Decaprio said in an AP video.

Decaprio said she hoped Beyonce will encourage people to adopt shelter dogs.
