Boyfriend of woman killed in cannon fire arrested

A San Diego County man who allegedly fired a homemade cannon, killing his girlfriend, was arrested by authorities Tuesday.

The incident, which is being investigated by the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, occurred when the woman's boyfriend and another man were working on the cannon shortly after midnight outside the couple's mobile home and it exploded, according to a spokesman from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Richard Dale Fox, 39, was treated for minor injuries before being arrested on suspicion of detonating an explosive device in a manner resulting in death, authorities said.

Authorities said the cannonball was homemade and that Fox had been drinking. The mobile home was located near rural Potrero in eastern San Diego County.
