Woman drives car across beach, into ocean in San Francisco

A woman suffered minor injuries Friday in San Francisco after she drove her car across the sand and into the waves at Ocean Beach.

It’s not clear what caused the woman to drive toward the water, said Capt. Jeanne Seyler of the San Francisco Fire Department.

She used a ramp near Lincoln Way to access the beach, then drove nearly 350 feet across the sand to reach the water, officials said.

“I can’t explain how she managed to get across the sand because it’s a good distance,” Seyler said, adding it was not clear if the woman was intoxicated. “But responders were able to see her headlights.”

Rescuers arrived at 6:30 a.m. to find the woman sitting inside her partially submerged black Lexus. She was pulled out of the water and taken to San Francisco General Hospital. Beach officials were waiting until low tide to pull the car out.
