Train hits car being driven on railroad tracks in Encinitas

A southbound train hit a car being driven on the railroad tracks in Encinitas in northern San Diego County, an official said Wednesday.

The occupants of the car had fled before the train hit the vehicle about 10:45 p.m. Tuesday, said Sgt. Robin Lawrence of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The car sustained major damage, the train minor damage, and no injuries were reported.

Drunk driving is suspected in the incident, Lawrence said.
