Scene where girl was drowned, another injured called traumatizing

February 15, 2012 |  1:29 pm

A South Los Angeles mother used a baby bathtub to try to drown her two young daughters, police said.

Authorities say the mother, who may have a history of mental illness, fatally drowned her 1-year-old daughter and also attempted to drown her 5-year-old daughter by shoving her face into the small tub, said Deputy Police Chief Pat Gannon. The older girl remains in extremely critical condition at Children's Hospital Los Angeles.

Police said the mother's efforts were interrupted by her husband, who came home from the grocery store to discover his wife trying to down their children in a converted garage.

"I don't know what made her snap," Gannon said, adding that she has been taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Firefighters arrived at the home, in the 900 block of West 50th Street, about 7:30 a.m. and tried to resuscitate the girls, who were unconscious and unresponsive. Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath told KTLA-TV the toddler was purple and "in really bad shape."

The scene -- which included the distraught father -- was so traumatic that first responders from the police and fire departments are being offered counseling, Gannon said.

"This is a tragic and horrific incident," Gannon said. "Something no one likes to see."
