Oceanside soldier killed in Bahrain crash

PFC Cortez
A 24-year-old soldier from Oceanside has been killed in a traffic accident in the Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain, the Army announced Monday.

Pvt. 1st-class Cesar Cortez was killed Saturday. The accident is under investigation, the Army said.

Cortez was with an air-defense artillery regiment based at Fort Bliss, Texas. He enlisted in March 2011 and deployed to Bahrain in December. He is survived by his parents and a brother.

Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet, is a major U.S. ally in the region.
