February 11, 2012 |  1:26 pm

A motorist was killed Saturday in a head-on collision after he drove the wrong way on the northbound Costa Mesa Freeway in Tustin, authorities said.

A man driving a Nissan sedan south on the 55 Freeway collided with a woman driving a small Volkswagen sport-utility vehicle shortly before 3 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said. The accident occurred near East Santa Clara Avenue.

The woman suffered major injuries and had to be taken to a hospital; the man was trapped in his vehicle and had to be cut out, said Capt. Marc Stone of the Orange County Fire Authority.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has been withheld pending notification of next of kin, the CHP said.

The CHP said the cause of the accident remains under investigation.
