A woman who handed off her baby to a homeless person in a tent in downtown Los Angeles has been arrested, police said.

The mom allegedly gave her baby to another woman in a tent at 12:30 a.m. Tuesday near Main and 3rd streets.

"I was just sleeping in my tent with my boyfriend, you know, and then we got woken up by a lady just shaking our tent and trying to unzip it," a woman who identified herself only as Kass told KTLA-TV.

Kass said the woman came into the tent, "sat down and started yelling, 'They're after me! They're after me! The cops are after me!'"

Kass and her boyfriend asked the woman what was going on.

"She goes, 'They're trying to take my baby! They're trying to take my baby!'" Kass said.

Kass held the baby for about 45 minutes, waiting for the mom to return and then contacted police, said LAPD Officer Randolph Fukui.

Eventually, “the mom flagged down some police officers saying, ‘Where’s my baby?’ and at that point, she was arrested” on suspicion of child endangerment, Fukui said.

The county child services agency took custody of the healthy, 5- to 6-month old baby, Fukui said.
