Earthquake: 4.4 quake strikes Northern California coast

A shallow magnitude 4.0 earthquake was reported Friday evening three miles from Petrolia, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The temblor occurred at 9:17 p.m. at a depth of 12.4 miles.

According to the USGS, the epicenter was 19 miles from Rio Dell, 20 miles from Ferndale, 36 miles from Eureka and 194 miles from Sacramento.

In the last 10 days, there have been no earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 or greater centered nearby.
