Baby abandoned on highway; grandmother arrested near Sacramento
Police found a 1-month-old baby on the side of a busy Sacramento-area highway on Friday afternoon.
California Highway Patrol officers found the baby boy in a carrier along the on-ramp to Interstate 80 about 2 p.m.
Witnesses said the baby was alone for about 45 minutes. While deputies were investigating, a woman approached them and said she had left the baby while she went to retrieve some belongings.
The woman, 54-year-old Kit Samuel, is the baby’s grandmother. Officers say she was intoxicated. She was later arrested.
Emergency crews are medically checking out the baby as a precaution, but all signs are that the child is not hurt. Child Protective Services will have custody of the baby.
