Woman dies after husband falls asleep, crashes car, police say

A woman died in a car crash Thursday morning after her husband fell asleep behind the wheel in Canoga Park, authorities said.

The husband, Leonides Ricalde, was driving west on Vanowen Street around 5:50 a.m. he dozed off and hit a parked car and a tree, said Sgt. Kurt Smith with the Los Angeles Police Department Valley Traffic Division.

"No drugs or alcohol were involved," Smith said. He speculated the couple were on their way home after working a graveyard shift.

Ricalde's wife, whose name has not been released, had not been wearing her seat belt, Smith said. She was pulled out of the vehicle by Ricalde and a bystander and died at the scene.
