Man shot to death fleeing bicycle traffic stop, authorities say

 

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department is investigating a fatal shooting by a deputy Saturday in Lancaster.

Two deputies had attempted to stop a man on a bicycle for a traffic violation, but the man fled on foot, sheriff's officials said.

The deputies chased the man a short distance. When he reached toward his waistband, the department said, one of the deputies, believing he could be drawing a weapon, shot him.

The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The deputies weren't injured.
