9-year-old boy attacked by pit bull in 'horrible' mauling

A 9-year-old Sacramento County boy is recovering from surgery for severe wounds inflicted when he was attacked by a pit bull.

A neighbor heard the boy's screams and helped fight off the dog, which had latched onto the boy's arm.

"It was horrible, one of the worst things I've ever seen," the neighbor, Pat Nunes, said of the mauling Saturday. "It was ugly. The dog was tugging on the little boy and it wouldn't let go. I just reacted."

Sheriff's deputies ultimately shot and killed the dog.

The boy was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent surgery for injuries to his arm and head.

His grandmother also was hurt when the dog bit her foot.
